About Block - Main Text

A meandering creative journey...

Snowden Flood has had quite a checkered career, after being told "You'll never be good at art" by her art teacher she left school to make and sell her jewellery and clothing on market stalls in London.  Some time later she studied fine art in Hull, working collaboratively with the local ship building industry, and then received a full scholarship to study her MFA in sculpture at Parsons in NYC.

While working and exhibiting as a studio artist she was employed by the Brooklyn Museum design department and later a job as a textile specialist, for Peter Marino Architect which involved travelling to work with weavers, printers, embroiderers - makers and manufacturers worldwide, to produce work for his projects.  This developed her passion for designing and manufacturing high quality bespoke products.

On returning home to London to settle permanently in 2000 Snowden developed a range of embroideries that were stocked for many years by Liberty and also worked with specialist bone china makers in Stoke on Trent to create award winning ranges of stylish tableware.  Until 2019 she ran a shop in London's Oxo Tower - winning a Time Out Award in 2018 for Best Loved Local shop in the Southbank.  Snowden's design ethos has always been to work closely with the makers of her products and there is always a strong emphasis on quality.

Over the years Snowden has designed/sourced and helped to manufacture many bespoke fabrics for interior designers and architects.  She also  frequently designs products on commission and clients include British Museum, St.Pauls Cathedral, The Museum of London, Southbank Centre, Dorchester Collection, The city of Turin, Chatsworth House, Tate Modern & London Transport Museum.

As of March 2019 Snowden works from a very beautiful studio complex in Croydon, join her mailing list for information about open studios and events.

For more information about her influences, career and where her inspirations come from, here is an excerpt from an interview she gave in 2015:

I’ve made and designed things ever since I can remember. First from market stalls selling my own designed and handmade earrings and clothing, I've always loved to make things. Later I won a scholarship to do my Masters in Sculpture at Parsons School of Design in NYC. After some years as a practicing artist in NY, I started my career in design working for the Brooklyn Museum and then the architecture and interiors firm Peter Marino Architects designing bespoke products for prestigious clients in New York.

At Peter Marino Architects we worked on projects such as the Four Seasons Hotels, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Chanel Stores as well as in the private homes of some very well-known people. When you work with clients like this, compromise is not an option and they expect - and get - absolute perfection. That very much informs my approach to making my products.  Quality was the only common denominator.

Inspiration comes from everywhere.... from antique shops, art galleries, books, magazines, museums.  As I said previously, quality is really important to me, which is one of the reasons the relationship with the maker is so key to me. A lot of thought and care goes into each product that I make.   In a world of cheap and throwaway mass-produced goods, I want my work  to both excite and delight by the evident thought, care and quality of the piece"
